Presidents Message
October 2005
Dennis Rood

This summer has been a very busy and interesting one for Porsche events.

The Picnic at Tolt Park in Carnation on August 14, 2005 was well orchestrated once again by John Thomas. Many cars showed up and the weather was beautiful. I met a very new member (ink wasn’t even dry on his envelope with his registration to Jana Swan), Jeff Varley. Jeff had purchased a Boxster off the web from a gentleman in Florida and it was on the truck being shipped up when he decided to come out to his first Porsche Club event. Look for his article elsewhere in the Spiel.

I was able to “add on” attendance at the Concorso Italiano at Monterey, California on 8/19 on the old golf course site at Fort Ord. This year it was much better managed and delivered. You could buy special parking with your ticket and park adjacent to the display area on a fairway. Lot’s of beautiful  Italian cars and even a couple of Porsche 356s.

Nancy and I & Larry and Sherrel Nelson led about 37 cars up to Whistler on 8/26. The weather was sunny and bright and we had no infractions or mishaps. One 911-Turbo, had a little trouble with some relays but was able to go ahead and get new ones at Roger Jobs Porsche in Bellingham and continue on the rest of the way and the weekend. Lunch at the Dutch Mother’s in Lynden was good and quick, once again, in a private dining room. The only hitch was that we hit about 5 miles of recently put down oil and gravel road in Snohomish County between Smokey Point exit off I-5 and Stanwood. Everyone went slow, kept their distances and I didn’t hear any complaints of oil or rock damage, even from the concours folks. Whistler weekend was very upscale this year at the Fairmont, with a rooftop reception and excellent rates on the luxurious rooms. Four hot tubs and 2 swimming pools kept us relaxed after the Saturday concours and the banquet was very good, with short speakers and awards ceremony. Thanks to Bob Benson of Canada West and his crew and to Al Lanng and Bill Rogers for staging the concours and to Jeff Barstow for delivering an excellent autocross program once again.

Finally, I was one of the lucky ones to win an opportunity to buy one of the 48/50 50th Anniversary Club Coupes featured in the July Panorama so put my order in the last week of August. I saw the car at Parade and sat in it at the Concours on Sunday. It should be here by Thanksgiving and what a nice Holiday Present that will be.

Hope to see you soon at another Porsche Club of the Northwest event. There is still a lot of fun left in 2006 like the tour to Cannon Beach, DE and Skills Days and social events.
