Presidents Message
September 2005
Dennis Rood

July was a whirlwind of activity as the club had scheduled 10 activities for the month.

We had just come back from the Parade in Hershey and a few days of vacation in the Big Apple and by the time we got to the board meeting on the 11th the month was 1/3 over.

At the board meeting on the 9th, it was my pleasure to give the 1st Place Award for best Newsletter in the large club category to first year editor Denise Missler and Assistant Editor Nick Missler. They are to be congratulated for continuing a tradition for the previous three years by Gary and Nancy Elwood. We are now four in a row for PNWR and I know we can win again in Portland in 2006 and San Diego in 2007.

Big congratulations to Barb Coplen who took a 5th place award for our excellent web site, which I presented to her also. This is not an easy category to compete in as it includes ALL of the CLUBS in PCA and that is a lot of clubs. Congratulations once again Barb.

Both of these awards were announced at Parade at the Concours banquet on Sunday evening and, while I called Denise, Nick and Barb and told them they had won, we wanted to make the awards in person at the board meeting.

Nancy and I attended the I-5 party hosted by Alex Spearman and Luke Wilson and their staff on July 9th. The evening was beautiful and Alex was decked out in a wild afro wig and 70’s polyester. Luke similarly attired. There was a 7 piece band that played entertainment and dance music and the show room was cleared for dancing and conversation. There was a buffet and even an ice cream Harley Davidson with sidecar for desert. Thanks Alex for hosting this event. I am sure we will get an even bigger turnout next year.

We also participated on Larry and Sherrel Nelson’s tour on July 16th, starting at the Super Mall and ending in Graham at a great Italian restaurant called Amici’s. Larry and Sherrel obviously spent a lot of time driving this complex route and even provided canisters of hot Starbucks coffee and pastries at the rest stop in a park. It rained for the first part of the trip but we had a shelter at the park. Group 2 kept getting lost and becoming group 3 and by the time they got to the shelter the coffee and pastries were low. Everyone had a great time and a great drive. Larry and Sherrel have really done a great job this year as our new Tour Co-Chairs and have s few more lined up for the rest of the year. Try to make one and you will come back.

We missed the Concours at Piccolo’s as were out on our boat in the San Juan Islands but we hear it was a big success once again with full attendance. This is becoming an annual event and we hope that Mike and Sharon do this again next year.

Finally, the ALMS race in Portland was a really great event. Congratulation’s to Duncan and his volunteers who helped PCA and Porsche Cars of North America and IMSA put on a great PorschePlatz. We had talks on Saturday from Jack Baer, liaison rep from Porsche Cars of North America and PCA and also from the VP of Porsche Motor Sports.

Lunch was included in our registration and Alex Job’s team won their class again in first place. Greg and Jodi Fordahl led tours through the Alex Job pits and trailers, organized by Duncan and crew. Thanks Duncan for a great “Special Event” once again, to all of the volunteers who worked the parking, new members desk, tours, etc and also to Greg and Jodi Fordahl for providing private tours once again of one of the best racing teams in the US and the world for Porsches. This is the second ALMS weekend in a row and it also provides a great social time with our members at the races, lunch, dinners and tours. Plan to come out next year.

A word about Parade in Portland next year. John Draneas, Chairman, has asked if our region would staff an entire day in the hospitality suite. It will likely be 2 to 4 hour shifts and run from mid-morning to 8 p.m. in the evening. Send me an email if you would like to volunteer for this. I know it is early but I would like to see how many we could get committed early. I think we will likely need 16-20 people. Couples usually work well volunteering together.

There are still a lot of great events left in the year with DE days, Autocross, Skills days and tours, so get a friend and come on out. You will have fun. I guarantee it!!
